What to see and do on an Oman holiday?

Oman, a sultanate on the Arabian Peninsula, offers any traveller a wonderful blend of ancient history, dramatic landscapes, and vibrant culture. Whether you crave adventure in the vast desert or are looking for cultural exchanges in the many bustling souks, Oman has something for every explorer.

Most people begin their journey in the capital city, Muscat. Here, the majestic Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture with intricate details and sprawling prayer halls. Ensure you don't miss a stroll along the Mutrah Corniche, a scenic waterfront promenade, where you can soak in the sea views and watch traditional dhows bobbing on the waves. For a taste of true Omani heritage, delve into the labyrinthine alleys of the Mutrah Souq. Here, you can haggle for treasures like hand-woven rugs, fragrant frankincense, and gleaming silver jewellery, all being sold by friendly vendors who enjoy the act as much as you will.

Oman's natural beauty takes centre stage once you travel outside the capital. If you are an adventure seeker, take a thrilling 4x4 adventure into the Wahiba Sands, a sea of golden dunes sculpted by the wind. Here, you can spend the night under a blanket of stars in a luxurious desert camp, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Jebel Akhdar, the "Green Mountain," is the place to go if you seek cooler climes. Hike through cascading wadis, discover ancient villages clinging to the mountainsides, and explore the maze-like trails of Misfat al Abriyeen. In this traditional village, time seems to have stood still.

If history is your thing, you will be interested in Oman's rich past at sites like Nizwa Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the fort's labyrinthine corridors, climb its watchtowers for wonderful views, and learn about Oman's role as a trading hub on the ancient frankincense route. In Salalah, the southern province, discover the UNESCO-listed tombs of Al Ayn, a vast necropolis that gives insight into Oman's pre-Islamic era.

For the romantic souls, Oman's wadis, canyons carved by water over millennia, offer a peaceful haven for exploration. Wadi Shab, a paradise nestled amidst towering cliffs, is a must-visit. Take a relaxed walk through the wadi, swim in crystal-clear turquoise pools, and discover a hidden waterfall at the end. Wadi Bani Khalid, another beautiful wadi, boasts emerald pools ideal for swimming and picnicking amidst the dramatic scenery.

If you want to explore Oman's coastline, it is comparable to any of the best coastal regions in the world. Dive into the crystal-clear waters of the Musandam Peninsula, a mountainous region jutting into the Strait of Hormuz. Explore coral reefs teeming with marine life, encounter playful dolphins, watch turtles coming in to nest or simply relax on pristine beaches. If you like sailing or boat trips, cruise to Daymaniyat Islands National Park, which offers world-class snorkelling and diving opportunities amidst vibrant coral reefs and shipwrecks.

Oman's cultural tapestry is intertwined with many vibrant traditions. Witness a breathtaking display of swordsmanship, a historical Omani art form, or experience the warmth of Omani hospitality by sharing a cup of kahwa, a strong Arabic coffee. Be taken away by the rhythmic beats of Omani music and the graceful movements of traditional dances, all performed by locals keen to preserve their culture and history.

Any Oman holiday wouldn't be complete without indulging in some of its delicious cuisine. Try dishes like Shuwa, a slow-cooked meat dish marinated in spices, or Meshkak, skewered and grilled meat flavoured with fragrant herbs. When at the coast, take the chance to try freshly caught seafood or enjoy the deliciously sweet dates, a local Omani speciality.

There are many reasons that you should visit Oman, as it offers an unforgettable experience for every kind of traveller.  From the bustling cityscapes to the serene mountains, the vast deserts to the turquoise waters, Oman promises a journey that will leave you wanting more.

Oman Turtle Conservation

Oman's shores are a vital sanctuary for sea turtles. These magnificent creatures, some surviving since the dinosaurs, find a haven in Oman's coasts to lay their eggs and continue their ancient lineage. Five of the world's seven sea turtle species grace Oman's coastline, with the green turtle being the most frequent visitor.

The beaches transform into nesting grounds yearly, typically between May and September. Thousands of turtles, particularly greens, emerge from the waves under the cloak of darkness. With powerful flippers, they laboriously dig nests in the warm sand before carefully laying their clutches of eggs.

Oman boasts several key nesting sites. Ras al-Jinz, on the eastern coast, is a popular destination for turtle watching. The Ras al-Jinz Turtle Reserve is crucial in protecting these vulnerable creatures. Trained guides lead visitors on nighttime excursions, ensuring minimal disturbance to the nesting turtles.

Unfortunately, all of Oman's sea turtles are endangered. Threats like pollution, habitat loss, and fishing gear endanger their survival. Thankfully, Omanis recognize the importance of these gentle giants, and the government and conservation groups work tirelessly to protect nesting sites and educate the public.

Responsible tourism initiatives ensure that turtle-watching experiences are respectful and minimize stress on the turtles. Visitors are advised to follow guidelines set by the reserve, such as maintaining a distance and using red lights at night, which is less disruptive to the turtles.

Visitors become part of the conservation effort by experiencing the magic of sea turtles in Oman. It's a reminder of the delicate balance of our oceans and the responsibility we share to protect these remarkable creatures for generations to come.
