Dominican Republic Small Group History Tours

The Dominican Republic has a rich history that dates back to the pre-Columbian era, when the indigenous Taíno people inhabited the island of Hispaniola. Columbus claimed the island for Spain in 1492, and for the next few centuries, the island was a Spanish colony. However, by the early 19th century, the colony had grown restless, and a series of uprisings and wars led to the formation of the independent nation of Haiti in 1804. The remaining Spanish-speaking portion of the island became the Dominican Republic in 1844.

During the next hundred years, the country was ruled by a series of dictators, which resulted in political instability, economic hardship, and foreign intervention. In the 1960s, the country transitioned to a democratic government, but this was short-lived, and the country was soon ruled by another dictator, Rafael Trujillo. Trujillo ruled with an iron fist for over 30 years, but was assassinated in 1961.

Since then, the Dominican Republic has experienced democratic elections, economic growth, and cultural resurgence. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the country has become a major tourist destination, with its tropical climate, white sand beaches, and rich history attracting millions of visitors each year. Despite some ongoing challenges, such as poverty and inequality, the Dominican Republic remains an important player in the Caribbean region and is known for its vibrant culture, music, and dance.
