With around a 90% chance of finding chimpanzees on any day, Kibale National Park is the most popular place to track them in Uganda. Please note that upgrading this 1-hour tracking to a 4-hour Chimpanzee Habituation Experience is also possible. This must be booked as far in advance as possible.

For people interested in primates and birds who are happy to take another walk, we can also visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. It is also possible to visit the local people or the crater lakes here. There is an option to take a night walk through the forest to see the animals of the night, such as bush babies (optional).

Day 4 -
This morning, we will transfer to the Queen Elizabeth National Park, which takes about four hours. You will stop for a photo opportunity as you pass the equator. On arrival at QEII National Park, there should be time for a game drive in the afternoon. This world biosphere reserve is a vast and rich national park filled with abundant wildlife, including the tree-climbing lions. Explore the varied habitats such as lakes, rivers, open savanna, acacia woodland, tropical forest and vast wetlands. The park supports an impressive 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species.

Day 5 - Queen Elizabeth National Park Kazinga Channel
Enjoy a game drive in the morning and then take a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon. The shores of this channel draw many wild animals and birds in addition to reptiles throughout the year, with one of the largest populations of hippos in the world and plentiful Nile crocodiles.
Going for an experimental Lion Tracking (optional – book well in advance) is also possible.

It is also home to many buffalo and elephants and offers a good chance of sighting the rare shoebill on the shore of Lake Edward.

It is also possible to go chimp-tracking in Kyambura Gorge or Kalinzu Forest Reserve or take a forest walk and visit the bat caves in Maramagambo (all optional—book well in advance).
Overnight at either Ishasha Jungle Lodge or Enjojo Lodge safari tent (HB)
Included today: game drives

Day 7 - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
You will have a final early morning game drive in Ishasha to hopefully see the tree-climbing lions. Later, you will drive to Bwindi Impenetrable. On the way, you pass through attractive villages and will view some breathtaking views of the mountains. The name Bwindi is derived from the Runyakitara word Mubwindi and means "a place full of darkness". This name comes from the extensive stands of bamboo interspersed amongst the larger forest hardwoods. Almost half of the world's mountain gorilla population, approximately 1,067 individuals, find haven here, making Bwindi a stronghold for conservation. The drive to your accommodation in Bwindi will take 2 to 5 hours as the lodge we will stay at in Bwindi depends on the group of gorillas you will track.
Overnight at lodge in Bwindi*
Included today: game drive

*Depending on the group of gorillas you will be tracking, we will choose where to sleep in Bwindi. There are four areas for Gorilla tracking in Bwindi: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga. Lodges we use are Buhoma: Buhoma Haven Lodge (HB), Ruhija: Bakiga Lodge (HB), Nkuringo: Gorilla Close up Lodge (HB), Rushaga: Rushaga Gorilla Camp (HB)

Day 8 – Gorilla Trek
It is an early morning departure with your ranger to search for one of the world's most exciting and endangered animals, the Mountain Gorilla. Bwindi has 17 habituated gorilla families across four distinct areas: Nkuringo, Buhoma, Ruhija and Rushaga. The gorillas here live in thick tropical forests, and tracking them can be challenging as the hillsides can be steep. It can take around 1-3 hours to reach them. Generally, the better accommodation is located in the Nkuringo and Buhoma regions, so trekking is focused here. You will spend one hour with one of our closest relatives. An experience you will never forget.
Overnight at a lodge in Bwindi (HB)
Included today: gorilla trek

Day 9 - Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, we start the 4-hour drive to Lake Mburo National Park. There will be time for a game drive or an optional boat trip on the lake in the afternoon. In the evening, embark on a night game drive with a high chance of seeing leopards. Lake Mburo National Park is well known for impala, though it has a vast wildlife population, including zebra, eland, buffalo, oribi, leopard, hyena, and hippo. There are no elephants or lions, so walking safaris are possible in this park.
Overnight at Rwakobo Rock or Kigarama Wilderness Lodge (HB)
Included today: game drive, night game drive

Day 10 - Entebbe
If time allows, we will have a final game drive or game walk in the morning. It is a 5-hour drive back to Entebbe, and we have some final photos at the Equator. Transfer to the airport for your departure after a memorable Uganda small group tour.

Government Travel Safety Advice

We strongly recommend that you check your government's travel advisory for up-to-date information and advice about your destination: safety and security, entry requirements, health, local laws and customs. For UK citizens, check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice. Please refer to the COVID-19 entry requirements page for any country-specific conditions of entry.

Visa and Passport Information

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Uganda. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Rwanda. You’ll need one blank page on your passport for entry stamps.

Visas

You can apply for a visa at the Ugandan High Commission in London or apply online for an ‘e-visa’. You can find full details of how to apply on the website of the Ugandan High Commission in London. You should give yourself sufficient time to apply for a visa and make sure when applying that the start date and validity covers the period you wish to travel.

You can also apply for an East African Tourist Visa. This is valid for 90 days and allows multiple entry into Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. You can apply for this visa on the ‘e-visa’ website.

You need a visa to enter Rwanda. Thirty-day tourist visas are free and available on arrival for citizens of member states of the Commonwealth (including the UK), as well as for those of the African Union and the Francophonie. You can also choose to get a visa in advance at any Rwandan diplomatic mission or online.

*only a Uganda visa is required for the Uganda small group tour

Health

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website. Each country-specific page has information on vaccine recommendations, any current health risks or outbreaks, and factsheets with information on staying healthy abroad. Guidance is also available from NHS (Scotland) on the FitForTravel website.

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or purchased in the UK can be different in other countries. If you’re travelling with prescription or over-the-counter medicine, read this guidance from NaTHNaC on best practice when travelling with medicines. For further information on the legal status of a specific medicine, you’ll need to contact the embassy, high commission or consulate of the country or territory you’re travelling to.

Medical facilities in Uganda are limited especially outside Kampala. Medical help at the scene of an accident is likely to be limited, particularly outside of Kampala, and many popular tourist attractions are far from adequate medical facilities. In the case of serious accident or illness, evacuation by air ambulance may be required. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

Malaria and Schistosomiasis (bilharzia) are common in Uganda. There are regular outbreaks of cholera in Uganda. You should follow the health advice issued by the National Travel Health Network and Centre. UK health authorities have classified Uganda as having a risk of Zika virus transmission. F

Only use boiled or bottled water, and avoid ice in drinks. Don’t eat food prepared by unlicensed vendors or where you have concerns about kitchen hygiene.

According to Rwandan law, any person on Rwandan territory must have health insurance.

What to bring on your Uganda and Rwanda Combined Tour

Clothing

Light clothing will be sufficient for most of your trip. Long sleeve shirts/tops and pants are ideal especially for the mornings and evenings when mosquitoes and other bugs get active. Ideally, your normal warm clothing will work fine. A light waterproof coat should be included.

Footwear

Well-worn low-cut hiking shoes are ideal for most safari activities. Since some of the hikes and activities like gorilla tracking can take quite some time, it is better to have comfortable and well-tested shoes. Any normal pair of running shoes or hiking shoes will be sufficient.

Luggage while on your tour

Please allow yourself one main piece of luggage and a day-sack. Remember, you are expected to carry your own baggage, so don't overload yourself, a soft wheely bag may be easier to manage than a suit case.

Equipment

We recommend a sunhat, sunscreen, a torch, insect repellent and a waterbottle. A solar charger for your phone and other electronics is a good idea. Remember your binoculars and camera.

Currency

The currency structure of Uganda consists of banknotes and coins and is denoted in Uganda Shilling. ATMs are widely available and credit cards widely accepted in Kampala and in other main towns. The Rwandan Franc is the currency in Rwanda and you should expect to pay for transport and in smaller shops using cash. There are ATMs in Kigali, but not all of them accept foreign cards.

Use of electronic devices

For Uganda the associated plug type is G, which is the plug that has three rectangular pins in a triangular pattern. Uganda operates on a 240V supply voltage and 50Hz. In Rwanda there are two associated plug types, types C and J. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type J is the plug which has three round pins. Rwanda operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

Local Customs

Homosexual activity is illegal and not tolerated in Uganda’s conservative society. Public displays of homosexuality like kissing in public places could lead to arrest and imprisonment. It’s illegal to buy, sell, kill or capture any protected wild animal or trade its parts without a licence. Uganda is a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) which bans trading in ivory. If you’re caught buying or trafficking these goods you’re liable to be prosecuted and receive a prison sentence or a fine.

Smoking is prohibited in all public places, workplaces, transport and other outdoor places within 50 metres of a public place. Electronic cigarettes and shisha (water-pipe tobacco) are banned. There are penalties including fines and/or imprisonment.

Penalties for drug trafficking are severe.

Don’t take photos of military, official or diplomatic sites, including Owen Falls Dam at the source of the Nile near Jinja. If you are taking photographs of people, ask their permission first.

It is an offence for anyone, including children, to dress in military style clothing. This includes clothing with marks, insignia and accessories associated with the Ugandan military, camouflage clothing and red berets. The offence carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment when convicted.

On 22 May 2019 it became an offence punishable by a prison sentence and/or a fine to offer money, food or clothing to children living on the streets in Kampala.

Homosexuality is not illegal in Rwanda but remains frowned on by many. LGBT individuals can experience discrimination and abuse, including from local authorities. There are no specific anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT individuals.
