Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most popular tourist destination, home to a wide variety of wildlife including lions, elephants, buffalo, and hippos, plus lakes and rivers that provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and fishing.

Wildlife

The park is home to over 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species, including lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, zebras, and crocodiles. One of the most unique features is the tree-climbing lions found in the Ishasha sector, thought to climb trees to escape the heat and get a better view of their surroundings. The park is also home to a number of chimpanzee communities, with chimpanzee trekking tours available.

Landscape

The park includes savannas, wetlands, forests and crater lakes. The Kazinga Channel, connecting Lake George to Lake Edward, is home to hippos, crocodiles, and birds, with boat cruises available. The Kyambura Gorge is a lush rainforest home to chimpanzees, baboons, and monkeys, plus waterfalls and caves.

Activities

Game drives are one of the most popular activities, alongside boat cruises, chimpanzee trekking, and visits to the Maramagambo Forest, home to a number of bird species including the shoebill. Visitors can also learn about the park's culture and history at the Katwe Salt Mines and the Kasubi Tombs, the burial grounds of the Buganda kings.

Tips for Visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park

• The best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from June to September, when the weather is mild and roads are easier to drive on.
• Book accommodations and activities in advance, as the park is very popular, especially during peak season.
• Pack comfortable shoes, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, and a raincoat.
• The Mweya Peninsula is home to a number of lodges and campsites, and a great place to see wildlife coming to drink from the Kazinga Channel.
• The Ishasha sector is known for its tree-climbing lions, as well as elephants, buffalo, and giraffes.
• The Katwe Salt Mines are a traditional salt mining area where visitors can learn about the process and see the unique salt landscape.
