Sierra Leone Explorer Tour

Sierra Leone, a small West African country nestled on the Atlantic Coast, must be one of our least visited destinations. It is difficult to know why more people do not travel to Sierra Leone. With its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and rich cultural heritage, the country offers something for everyone as you will see on this Sierra Leone tour.

Start your adventure in lively Freetown, a bustling city steeped in history and culture. Explore vibrant markets, admire old buildings from colonial times, and relax on beautiful beaches. Delve into Sierra Leone's history at the Sierra Leone National Museum, showcasing its rich heritage through artifacts and exhibits. Next, head to the renowned Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a place that helps orphaned and rescued chimpanzees recover. Watch these amazing creatures in their natural surroundings and learn more about them.

Take a boat trip to Bunce Island, a haunting reminder of the transatlantic slave trade and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a solemn place reflecting on a dark part of history before you continue your journey to Tasso Island, showcasing colonial charm against a backdrop of the ocean and rainforest. Explore the island's abandoned colonial buildings, relics of a bygone era.

Your adventure concludes at Tiwai Island, a wildlife haven known for pygmy hippos and a variety of other wildlife, showcasing Sierra Leone's natural beauty.

This special tour offers a remarkable exploration of Sierra Leone, encompassing its lively culture, fascinating history, and breathtaking natural scenery—an unforgettable journey waiting for you to discover.

Day 3 – Bunce Island and Tasso Island
Today, you will visit Bunce Island, which was the largest British slave castle on the Rice Coast of West Africa. Founded around 1670, it exported tens of thousands of African captives to North America and the West Indies until the British Parliament finally closed it down in 1807. The rice-growing skills of Africans from the west coast commanded high prices from rice plantation owners in North America.
(4 hours 30-minute return boat ride plus tour). Later we will also visit Tasso Island. This beautiful, peaceful island is 4 miles square and sits in the middle of the Sierra Leone River Estuary, only an hour by boat from Freetown.
Overnight at the Country Lodge Hotel or similar (BLD)

Day 4 - Freetown to Boma
This morning we will leave Freetown to travel to Tiwai Island by way of the Tiwai heritage trail. We make a stop at Boma village which is located down the Moa River from Tiwai. This community is unique among the eight others on the trail as it is the only one that has a woman as a chief. Legend has it that a 'Genie' made a prophecy that if Boma was to be prosperous, then the town chief must be female. You will experience the daily lives of the inhabitants as well as their dances and rituals including a visit to the grave of a “giant” where you will learn about the story of an ancient war between dwarves, called “Temui”, and the giants. You will see the Boma Cotton Tree, which protects the village from strong winds and storms. It’s the only Cotton Tree remaining in the surrounding villages, and so is a testament to Boma’s continuing positive relationship with nature.
Overnight at the Kwaanma Eco-Camp (meaning “Far Away”) in Boma village. (BLD)

Day 5 – Tiwai Island
After breakfast, we will walk to Nainiahun along Bush Trails and through the rice, cocoa and Kola nut plantations. We learning about the local way-of-life as we walk. Nainiahun means “Sand Village” in the Mende language, and is the site of artisanal diamond mining, which brings Temne and Mende people together to try their luck in the surrounding swamps. In Nainiahun, you will visit “Kote Wulehun” meaning ‘large stone village’. It is said that community members used to hide there during the tribal wars and that it made them invisible at will. It is a truly fascinating place. After taking your shoes off as a sign of respect, you will venture into this mystical place, that is home to porcupines, bats and other local wildlife. The area is protected by traditional decree and is a great example of a conservation project based in traditional belief. The Nainiahun elders will share stories of elves, invisibility spells and powerful rituals before carrying out a libation pouring ceremony to protect you on your onward journey. Following this mystical encounter, you can rest and enjoy a locally sourced meal under the shade of the palm trees before continuing on foot to the banks of the Moa River. Here a boat will take you to Tiwai Island. Take in the spectacular views of Tiwai Island and the neighbouring mainland, look out for monkeys jumping between the trees, learn about some of the 135 species of birds and, of course, watch out for the occasional crocodile. Late afternoon, there will be an opportunity to head out into the dense rainforest to track chimpanzees and observe endangered species of monkey in their natural habitat.

Day 6 – Tiwai Island to Tokeh
Early this morning you will head out to the dense jungle forest to observe chimpanzees or other monkey species. We will then depart Tiwai Island, heading back to Freetown and onwards to Tokeh. Tokeh lies approximately twenty miles east of Freetown and we will stay here for the next couple of nights.

Day 7 – Tokeh
The Tokeh beach is one of the largest and most attractive beaches in West Africa. Tokeh is also known for its mountains, forests, resort hotels, and nearby Tokeh Island, an uninhabited island a short boat ride from Tokeh town. The day is spent relaxing or you have an option to take a scenic walk (25 minutes) on the white sandy beach for relaxation.

Local Laws and Custom
Sierra Leone has a tolerant multi-religious culture. You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs.

Health
At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website. What to bring on the Sierra Leone Expeditionlorer Tour

Clothing
Lightweight, casual, non-synthetic clothing (cotton and natural fibers are best) which appropriately cover the body, when in the company of the local communities. Please understand local customs and religious requirements relating to dress codes. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it needs to be respectful.

Footwear
The ideal footwear would be walking shoes or boots and sandals.

Luggage while on your tour
Please allow yourself one main piece of luggage and a day-sack. Remember, you are expected to carry your own baggage, so don't overload yourself, a soft wheely bag may be easier to manage than a suitcase.

Equipment
We recommend a sunhat, suncream, a torch, insect repellent and a reusable water bottle. A small medical kit is advisable in case of scrapes and cuts. A power adapter for phones, laptops, etc.

Currency
The local currency in Sierra Leone is the Leone.  It is best to bring Euros for exchange purposes as it can be difficult to obtain the local currency outside of the region. It’s not difficult to change money either at banks or the hotels and your guide can assist with this.

There are also an increasing number of ATMs in larger towns. However, these are not always reliable and so it is best to think of them as a backup rather than your main means of obtaining money. Credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and better restaurants (usually in Freetown only) but are not commonly accepted elsewhere.

Exchanging foreign currency on the street or using unofficial money changers is illegal. Those using money changers, even for small amounts, including at the international airport, have been arrested.

Weather in Sierra Leone
The region experiences two distinct seasons: a dry season from October to April and a wet season from May to September. These seasons can change by a few weeks either side depending on climate variations. Although most people choose to visit in the dry season, it is also feasible to visit in the wet season. The rains, although heavy, do not last the whole day and usually take the form of short sharp bursts. However, some roads can be difficult to pass during the wet season.

Mobile / Wifi Availability
If you would like to use your phone and number registered to your home country when in West Africa it is important you inform your service provider and arrange international roaming, you will then be able to connect to local networks, however please be aware this can be expensive way to use data and make calls. It is possible to purchase a local sim which would need to be registered but can be a cheaper way for you to call and use the internet. Many hotels also boast broadband access via wireless hotspots.
