Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park: Home to Rwanda's Mountain Gorillas

Volcanoes National Park lies in the far north-west of Rwanda. Here, the Virunga Mountains rise steeply along the borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is Rwanda's most celebrated protected area and the country's flagship reason for a safari. In short, it is a chance to trek through bamboo forest and montane jungle. Your reward is an hour face to face with a family of mountain gorillas.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The park is home to around a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. They live in several habituated families, which visitors can trek to see each day. Guided groups set off early each morning with experienced trackers and armed rangers. The trails can climb steeply through dense vegetation before reaching a family group. Once you find the gorillas, you may spend one hour in their company. During that time, you watch them forage, rest, and interact. Many travellers regard it as one of the most moving wildlife encounters in Africa.

The Virunga Volcanoes

The park takes its name from the chain of dormant and extinct volcanoes that dominate the skyline. These include Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. You can climb Bisoke in a single day, and a crater lake rewards hikers at its summit. In contrast, Karisimbi, the tallest of the range, is a more demanding two-day trek through changing vegetation zones.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Beyond the gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places on Earth to see golden monkeys. This endangered and strikingly colourful primate lives only in the Albertine Rift. Tracking excursions are shorter and less strenuous than gorilla treks. Therefore, they are a popular addition for families and those with limited time.

Dian Fossey's Legacy

The work of primatologist Dian Fossey made the park famous around the world. She studied the mountain gorillas here for nearly two decades. Today, a guided hike leads to her research station, Karisoke, and to her grave among the gorillas she protected. As a result, visitors gain insight into the conservation history that continues to shape the park. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund carries on her work.

Planning Your Visit to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
