Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu: Rwanda's Great Lake Escape

Lake Kivu stretches along the western border of Rwanda, facing the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of the African Great Lakes. At over 2,700 square kilometres, it is also by far the largest body of water in the country. Terraced hillsides, fishing villages, and volcanic peaks ring its shores. As a result, it offers a complete change of pace after the forests and mountains further east. In short, it is a place to swim, relax, and unwind between safari activities.

Lakeside Towns

Gisenyi, in the north, is Rwanda's best-known lakeside resort town. It has a laid-back promenade, a sandy beach, and a cluster of hotels and restaurants overlooking the water. Further south, Kibuye sits on a peninsula surrounded by scattered islands. It is known for its quieter, more scenic setting. Finally, Rusizi in the south offers access to nearby Nyungwe Forest.

On the Water at Lake Kivu

Boat trips are the classic Lake Kivu activity. For example, you could take a short sunset cruise or visit one of the lake's many islands. Alternatively, spend an evening watching local fishermen head out in their traditional wooden boats. They sing as they row in formation, and they use lantern light to attract fish. Unlike many of Africa's other great lakes, Lake Kivu has no crocodiles or hippos. Therefore, swimming is safe here. Kayaking is also increasingly popular along the calmer shorelines.

The Congo Nile Trail

For more active travellers, the Congo Nile Trail follows the lake's Rwandan shoreline. This multi-day hiking and mountain biking route winds through terraced farmland, tea and coffee plantations, and small villages. Simple guesthouses line the way. However, even a single day's walk offers sweeping views back across the water.

Coffee and Tea Country

The hills above Lake Kivu are some of Rwanda's most productive coffee-growing regions. Several cooperatives and estates welcome visitors for tours and tastings. During a visit, they explain the journey from cherry to cup. Overall, it's a relaxed and worthwhile addition for anyone with an afternoon to spare.

Planning Your Visit to Lake Kivu, Rwanda

  • Lake Kivu is a scenic drive from Volcanoes National Park. Therefore, it makes an easy add-on to a gorilla trekking itinerary.
  • Accommodation ranges from simple lakeside guesthouses to smart resort hotels, with options at Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Rusizi.
  • The dry seasons offer the most reliable weather for boat trips and hiking. These run from June to September and from December to February.
  • Pack swimwear, comfortable walking shoes, and a light jacket for cooler evenings by the water.

Lake Kivu is the perfect counterpoint to Rwanda's mountain parks. Above all, it is a place to slow down, swim, and enjoy the country's gentler, more relaxed side.
