Andasibe-Mantadia National Park: Madagascar's Rainforest Gem
Andasibe-Mantadia National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse rainforests in the world. Located in eastern Madagascar, the park encompasses over 150,000 hectares of lush, tropical forest, and is home to a variety of unique and endangered species, including the indri, the largest lemur in the world.
Wildlife
The park is home to over 110 species of lemurs, as well as a variety of other mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians.
- Indri: the largest lemur in the world, known for its loud, haunting calls, typically found in groups of 2-10 individuals.
- Diademed sifaka: large, white lemurs with black heads and tails, known for their acrobatic movements through the trees.
- Eastern woolly lemur: small, brown, nocturnal lemurs with thick fur, rarely seen during the day.
- Parson's chameleon: one of the largest chameleon species in the world, known for its ability to change colour.
- Madagascar fish eagle: large, brown eagles with distinctive white heads and tails, found near rivers and lakes.
The park is also home to the fossa, the largest carnivore in Madagascar, and the aye-aye, a nocturnal lemur with large ears and long middle fingers.
Activities
The park has a well-developed network of trails ranging from easy to challenging, and research stations offer guided tours and educational programs. Camping is a great way to experience the rainforest at night, with designated campsites plus a few lodges and eco-camps. Birdwatching is also popular, with over 100 species of birds, including many endemic to Madagascar.
Research
Scientists from all over the world come to the park to study its unique ecosystem, from lemur conservation and rainforest ecology to the effects of climate change on the rainforest and its wildlife.
