Kyrgyzstan's Rich History: The Burana Tower
The Burana Tower is a 12th-century minaret located in the Chuy Valley of Kyrgyzstan, about 80 kilometres east of Bishkek. It is the only remaining structure of the once-thriving city of Balasagun, a major centre on the Silk Road. The tower is 24.6 metres tall and made of red brick, with intricate carvings and inscriptions decorating its surface.
The Burana Tower was once part of a larger complex including a mosque, a madrasa, and a caravanserai, destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century, though the tower survived – believed to have been used as a watchtower and beacon for travellers on the Silk Road. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a small museum housing artefacts from the ancient city.
