Float in the Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is one of the highlights of any Jordan holiday. As the lowest point on Earth, at more than 430 metres below sea level, its mineral-rich waters are so dense with salt that swimmers float effortlessly on the surface – a soothing reminder to pause and relax.
Floating and Therapeutic Mud
The sensation of floating without effort is unlike anywhere else on the planet, and it's the experience most visitors come for. Along the shore, the mineral-rich black mud is scooped up and applied to the skin, celebrated for centuries for its rejuvenating qualities. Many resorts along the coast offer spa treatments built around it.
A Restorative Stop
The Dead Sea is more than a swim; it's a restorative experience for both body and mind. Its shores are lined with resorts and beach clubs offering pools, spa facilities, and views across the water to the hills of the West Bank and Israel beyond.
Visiting the Dead Sea
- Getting there: the Dead Sea is around 55 kilometres, or roughly an hour's drive, from Amman.
- Best time to visit: spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures, as summer can be intensely hot.
- What to bring: swimwear, sandals for the mineral-crusted shoreline, and plenty of water.
- A tip: avoid shaving beforehand, as the salt water can sting on broken skin, and avoid getting the water in your eyes.
A stop at the Dead Sea pairs naturally with the rest of a Jordan itinerary, offering a tranquil, restorative contrast to the desert adventure of Wadi Rum and the ancient wonder of Petra.
