Simien Mountains: A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ethiopia

The Simien Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the northern highlands of Ethiopia. The mountains are home to a variety of unique wildlife and a number of historical and cultural sites, and offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside on a landscape popular for hiking, trekking, and camping.

Wildlife

The most famous animal in the Simien Mountains is the Gelada baboon, the only baboon species that lives in grasslands, known for their distinctive red chest patches and complex social structure. The Ethiopian wolf, the rarest canid in the world, is a solitary predator known for its reddish-brown fur and long, bushy tail.

The Walia ibex, the largest ibex species in the world, is known for its impressive horns and its ability to climb steep cliffs. The mountains are also home to klipspringers, dik-diks, hyenas, jackals, and foxes, plus over 180 species of birds, including the African lammergeyer, the Abyssinian longclaw, and the Ethiopian wattled ibis.

History and Culture

The Simien Mountains have a long and rich history, inhabited by humans as early as 200,000 years ago. The Debre Damo monastery is said to be the oldest church in Ethiopia, believed to have been founded in the 4th century and located on a remote mountaintop reached by climbing a series of steep steps.

Another important historical site is the Gondar Fasil Ghebbi, a complex of royal palaces and churches built in the 17th and 18th centuries and itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hiking, Trekking and Camping

The mountains offer a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging treks, including the Imet Gogo viewpoint, the Jinbar waterfall, and the Geech Abyss viewpoint. Popular trekking routes include the Choke to Chenek trek and the Simien Scout trek, while campsites range from basic to luxury lodges, including Sankaber and Chenek.

Why Visit the Simien Mountains?

The mountains are a great place to stargaze, located in a remote area with very little light pollution. They are also a great place to learn about Ethiopian culture, with a number of villages located in the mountains where visitors can learn about traditional Ethiopian ways of life.
